Today, one of the growing problem that every country has to face is the soil contamination as this would also affect the quality of produce that the land will provide for our consumption. To make sure that the soil is healthy, it should have the basic organic material needed for the soil such as limestone and granite and you also have to include animal droppings, leaves, location of the land, elevation whether it is in a valley or a mountain and lastly the climate.
If you grow a plant in a contaminated soil, what will happen?
You have to first know what type of soil and what type of toxins that is present, how severe the soil contamination, how much toxins will it enters the plant. Sandy soil are less likely to hold any chemicals as compared to soil that contains organic matter such as peat moss often hold on to all sorts of contaminants and this has an effect on the metabolic state of the microorganisms in the soil.
Soil contamination also has an effect on people who touch it, but it depends on what type of contaminant. Small animals or humans dig holes in it which will then the soil will dry up and becomes dry thus the dust particles will be inhaled while other dust particles will be absorbed by the skin. So, what causes the soil contamination?
Oil spills, toxic spills, pipe line leaks are often the reason why there is contamination in the soil and these have been used by factories, gas stations, mining and airports. Other soil contaminant contributor are the toxic pesticides that are being used in other countries, the over use of fertilizers and this are being used all over the world.
Whenever natural disaster happens such as hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis happens, any facilities that store toxins will be damaged and thus spilling and leaking chemicals and can then cause soil contamination. As an example, in southeast of New Orleans a large area is contaminated due to the fact that over a million gallon that is absorbed by the soil after hurricane and destroyed a lot of the holding facilities.
What are the different health problems and concerns that poses to humans?
In China, there is very little legislation when it comes to the protection of land and to safe guard from any soil contamination. In China, 10th of its land is contaminated and heir land is being irrigated by polluted water wherein the effects of soil contamination is devastating and can have great effect on the health of its population which causes kidney, liver and leukemia.
